Apparently CNN isn't all government propaganda. Check out this piece on life in Afghanistan
From the somewhat offensive rense.com, this letter from a US Afghani
So what else is there? What can be done, then? Let me now speak with true fear and trembling. The only way to get Bin Laden is to go in there with ground troops. When people speak of "having the belly to do what needs to be done" they're thinking in terms of having the belly to kill as many as needed. Having the belly to overcome any moral qualms about killing innocent people. Let's pull our heads out of the sand. What's actually on the table is Americans dying. And not just because some Americans would die fighting their way through Afghanistan to Bin Laden's hideout. It's much bigger than that folks. Because to get any troops to Afghanistan, we'd have to go through Pakistan. Would they let us? Not likely. The conquest of Pakistan would have to be first. Will other Muslim nations just stand by? You see where I'm going. We're flirting with a world war between Islam and the West.

An alternative from
Professor
Noam Chomsky of MIT speaking in December of 2000 about the US' role in
the middle east:
Well, let's turn to the question what can we do? The answer is we have choices. We can do a lot. So, for example, we can continue to provide helicopter gunships and other military support to ensure that Israel is able to attack civilians, maintain a blockade, starve them to death, and so on. And we can provide the funding that allows Israel to continue to integrate the occupied territories within Israel proper as it has been doing, settlements, infrastructure, etc. It doesn't matter which government is in office. It goes on under Barak about the same way it did under Netanyahu. And it's anticipated to go on next year. The budget provisions have already been made for next year. So we can continue with that if we'd like. Or, we can act to stop their participation in these activities, which is pretty straightforward. It doesn't require bombing or sanctions. It just means stop participating in atrocities, the easiest thing to do. That's a choice. And, in fact, we may even go further and call them off, as is pretty easily done when a country has the power that the United States has. I gave a couple of examples.

This is an attack on the way America is. Capitalism, loftiness, tranquility, consumption on demand, the ability to bend the world to our simplest personal needs. No one else in the world has these things. Not like we do. And someone out there believes that we're using them for the wrong purpose. Believes so strongly that they've moved heaven and earth. And I must wonder, what can we do in the face of such a belief? Perhaps it is time to wake up, and believe in America, in its potential, in its ideals. Perhaps it's time to reinvent ourselves - the complacent, fearless, mindless consumers. We may own the world, but when F-15s criss-cross the sky and the ash of our consumed lives rains down, perhaps its time for a claims adjustment.

Before all the fingerpointing starts let's ask ourselves how much we really know about what the US government and its corporate bedfellows do here and abroad. When it comes to the truth Americans are among the most uninformed and ignorant people on earth. We are spoonfed soap-opera type news that is highly censored and filtered, if not downright propaganda. We get surface level events while anything that points to underlying causes dies on the cutting room floor, because most of the time our government, or its allies, has a hand in it. Whatever comes out in the immediate future regarding today's attacks, you can be sure there's much more to the story that we won't hear. In some way our government did something to provoke this. Think about it: George W. comes into office under suspicious circumstances, he proposes reversals in environmental and economic policies that meet with (and believe me the level of this was suppressed) staunch opposition hear and abroad, the economy goes south, his approval rating starts to fall... Next thing you know some evil arabic force commits aggression, and we go to war. Hmmm... Kinda of reminds me of old George Sr.'s term (we found out later that Sadam was armed, then provoked by the U.S.).These people (the Bush family and their right wing cohorts) are warhawks; they believe the ultimate answer to all problems of state and society is war and aggression. Don't believe me? Watch what happens in the next few weeks. My guess is we'll be at war, probably in the middle east, fairly soon. May God be with us all... P.S.
